The 2020 Toyota Camry TRD starts at $31,995 and shows the TRD models don't make sense

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has, through a leaked dealer order guide, pricing for the Camry TRD, an answer to a question no one asked. Turns out, the Camry TRD will be the cheapest and most sporty way to get that sweet 301 horse V6 in a Camry. Here’s where the not make sense part comes in.

Kinja'd!!!

According to the site and the guide, the Camry TRD will undercut the Camry XSE by $4k (The Camry XSE V6 starts at $35,805). And price wise, the article states that with the starting price of the TRD, it can most be closely compared to the Camry SE, which can only be had with an I4. The TRD trim adds: “track-tuned enhancements like bigger brakes and a suspension setup that lowers the car 0.6 inches. The car also gets a unique aerodynamic kit designed by the company’s Calty design studio. A TRD exhaust, matte black wheels, red badging, and painted red brake calipers complete the look”. Yea whatever. What the TRD amounts to is nothing more than a Camry SE with go fast parts and a V6.

Kinja'd!!!

It all gets even more senseless when you consider that the Avalon TRD is being priced $4k higher than the Camry XSE. Keep in mind that both TRD models and the Camry XSE V6 all share the same 301 horse V6. The TRD trims add nothing power wise.

Will people bite? It remains to be seen. Toyota gave us 2 “performance” models no one asked for, and then have both of them share the same engine with no power upgrades. All the while, like I mentioned before, not giving us actual performance models, like a Corolla hot hatch or hell even a TRD tuned GT86. Both of these models though should be pretty good used buys in a few years.

A very specific kind of douchebag dad wants a Tacoma, but the wife said they needed something family friendly.

I think nobody will buy this.  It reminds me of Pontiac in the 80s.  Offering a lot of flash, minimal performance upgrades for monies.

I agree. It’ll be a good use buy like I mentioned. But it will sell so few you’ll have a hell of a time finding one. I haven’ t looked in a TRD catalog but honestly you would probably come out cheaper doing a lot of this stuff yourself.

I had a trd catalog back in the 80s for my supercharged mr2. They had a massive amount of performance items and tips. Now it’s more commercialized, less informative and we ll, more like the trd c amry.

Seems to be little more than appearance package which makes little sense, when you consider how aggressive the XSE already tries to look.

Most of the good stuff is probably just for the Taco/Tundra.

Exactly. Honestly, The SE could have been the XSE and the TRD should have been the XSE. And then have an Avalon XSE.

The face when a “sport” which is 50hp down is just as fast (auto). And the fact that you can row your own if you feel inclined.

Maybe there will be some suspension upgrades on the TRD   but it’s not just suspension when “the Accord felt more composed at 125 mph than the Camry did at 90"

The Accord has shown, especially in Sport trim, that its the go to for drivers car for the person that needs family sedan but wants something that’ s engaging. I would’ ve gotten one but my local Honda dealers weren’ t budging on price.

Yep very true.

And y eah its unfortunate the dealer’s have been following that reputation. Even here in Honda’s midwest back yard they are known as sticklers and hard to work with.

Blimey...that’s expensive for a Camry . I can get into a V6 Camry SX (second from the top) grade for around US$28,000 drive away. And that's before there's any negotiation!

I had to look up what SX was but it looks like its pretty much our XSE . You guys have strangely named trims. Our L or LE is your Ascent. Weird how you guys only get 4 trims to our 10.

I wonder if the Avalon is long for this world. I see far more ES350s than Avalons on the road.

Working for a dealership, ive come to find out theres basically no markup or profit in selling a new car. A $ 50k lexus has maybe $2k in profit for the dealership. All of the profit comes from accessories,  warranties, and service visits. It's still considered a winning sale to sell a car for $500 under invoice price. The car market has drastically changed in recent years.

Right. And the new gen ES is a looker. They all step on each other's toes though. The Camry and Avalon are so close together it makes you wonder why the Avalon exists. And the ES calls the Avalons existence into question simply by being. By the time you load out an Avalon you might as well head over to Lexus.

Maybe but Columbus isn’t exactly small. Heck the accord is made  2 0 minutes from us. Along with   HAM we also have R&D, and PMC with in 30 minutes.

The number of trims reflect the small size and relative simplicity of  the market. Four trims is actually a lot for this market...two or three is more common. And many niche Euro cars come in with just one...

Wow. Yea that really does reflect the market. I guess in a way it’s better that way. Here you have a trim for any and everyone almost. Like you can get the sporty XSE trim in both I4 and v6.

It makes it easier and more profitable for the manufacturer. It’s also worth noting that we are largely a  build to order market. Dealers don't hold much stock and head office avoids it as much as possible. No inventory...no deals.
